Greek Islands
Greece has thousands of islands and islets, although only a relatively small number are inhabited. Each island has its own geography, history, traditions and character.
The familiar names include Corfu, Crete, Rhodes, Santorini, Mykonos, Zakynthos and Kefalonia, but there are many others, from large islands with substantial towns to small islands where traditional life remains much more visible.

Greek cities reflect different periods of the country’s history. Athens combines ancient monuments with a large modern capital, while Thessaloniki has a particularly rich mixture of Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and modern influences.

Few countries have a historical record as extensive as Greece. Ancient Greek civilization is only one part of that history, which also includes the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman periods and the development of the modern Greek state.
Archaeology continues to reveal new evidence about the people who lived in Greece long before the classical period. Ancient cities, temples, theatres, tombs and everyday objects provide a picture of societies that were considerably more complex than the familiar stories of gods and heroes suggest.

Greek culture can be found not only in museums and archaeological sites but also in ordinary daily life.
Food, family traditions, celebrations, music, village customs, hospitality, gestures, expressions and even the way people spend their free time can reveal aspects of Greek culture that are easily missed by looking only at its ancient past.

The Greek Language
The Greek language has a history extending over thousands of years. Ancient Greek has had a particularly strong influence on scientific, medical, philosophical and technical vocabulary in many modern languages.
Modern Greek, however, is much more than a surviving form of an ancient language. It has its own vocabulary, expressions, idioms, slang and everyday ways of speaking.
Greek words can sometimes reveal connections between language, history and culture that are not immediately obvious to a modern reader.

Nature and Landscapes
Greece is often associated with beaches and islands, but its geography is considerably more varied.
Mountain ranges cross much of the mainland, while forests, wetlands, rivers, lakes, gorges and fertile plains can be found alongside the Mediterranean coastline. The islands themselves range from mountainous and heavily forested landscapes to dry, rocky environments.
This geographical variety has influenced settlement, agriculture, food, traditions and the development of different regions throughout Greek history.
